sunday in sandwell valley

walked around the lake watched
it whipped like forked egg-white peaks

by a bitter wind enemy of bald heads
the dog tried to savage a canada goose

your mouth twitched nervously I abruptly
had an image of christ on the cross

could feel the agony realised
all of a sudden felt my left hand

clutching a fistful of nails
my right a heavy hammer
