birmingham sunrise

there's the sun coming up now over birmingham
lightening the stains on the tower-blocks
softly brooming the shadows from potholed streets

out at gravelly hill the concrete parthenon pillars
tremble under the ceaseless juggernaut stampede
that soon must stagger to a halt at junction nine

down at corley the smell of pricey breakfast bacon
drifts heavily across the restless carriageways
high above the central reservation a kestrel hovers
